HUNTER ACADEMY OF SPORT CLAY TARGET DTL SQUAD

It was a proud moment for Hunter Academy of Sport (HAS) Coach Graham Gosling as he witnessed his new DTL Junior squad recruits achieve placements in Newcastle’s Annual DTL event. Graham said he was proud to be associated with a fantastic group of young people and excited about watching this group mature as adults and clay target shooters.

With 115 competitors on Saturday and 125 on Sunday the HAS team members had to work for their achievements against very seasoned shooters.

Kelby’s effort in the handicap was no mean feat to have to shoot 4 targets on her own to catch up with the first squad of qualifiers ( seven shooting for 3-5th place) then regroup with Frank Zilliotto and have to shoot a hard right hander off lane 5 to win the third place was very exciting and showed great concentration and control.

David Douglas shot consistently to take out "B" grade high gun, traditionally a very competitive grade. Even though Hayden didn't take home a trophy he shot well and was happy with his scores, a very mild and easy going young man. Nathan, Brock and Gerard all shot consistently and all had section wins.

Congratulations to the squad on a great performance.

Four members of the Hunter Academy of Sport Trap Squad travelled to Brisbane for the 1st round of the Australia Cup, Australia’s ISSF  Olympic Trap circuit competition and Australasian Grand Prix on the 28th February 2009. There were 89 competitors which included the Japanese Winchester High Gun on their annual shooting  tour. Over the two days of competition outstanding rounds were shot by squad members Nathan Wilkinson scoring a 24/25 and Russell McCloy scoring two perfect rounds of 25.

In the double trap, Mick Harris shot consistently to make it into the final top 6 finishing 5th overall. However it was to be Russell’s day as he went on, to out shoot two Olympic competitors to win the overall event, his first major open ISSF Olympic Trap event with a score of 120/125. This will open up the way for Russell to compete in overseas competitions. The National Shotgun coach approached Russ to see if he would be available to travel to Italy later this year at the World Championships.

HUNTER ACADEMY OF SPORT – YOUNG SHOOTER TAKES MAJOR AWARD

Our future Olympians will come from our junior ranks and one of the best nurseries at the moment is the Hunter Academy of Sport at Newcastle, which features Clay Target Shooting as one of its sports.

More than 2,000 people attended the presentation night earlier this month at which Newcastle Lake Macquarie Clay Target Club junior member, Russell McCoy from Old Bar near Taree took one of the major awards.

We sincerely congratulate Russell who took the award for "outstanding performance in an individual (non team) sport.

The Academy was founded in 1987 and is now Australia’s largest regional facility with about 600 young athletes taking part in the various talent development programs.

Congratulations are also due to NLMCTC executive, Graham Gosling, who is also the Clay Target Shooting Program Co-Ordinator and a very proud Head Coach. It is good to see our youngsters participating so well and at such high levels in shooting sports.
