The
YORKSHIRE TROPHY 2010
Jason
Jenkins, Vito Balliana and Bob Ellison
It
is 1937, the Hindenburg Zeppelin has exploded in a ball
of flame, Joseph Lyons is Australian PM, George VI is
crowned King of England and Fred Birkby commissions
the making of and subsequent shooting of the Harrogate
Trophy at
the Harrogate
Gun Club, Yorkshire, UK, in preparation for the up
coming grouse season.
73years
later, that same trophy was being shot for at the NLMCTC
on 2nd October, thanks to Fred
Birkby’s nephew, Bob Ellison. In 1984, Bob brought the trophy to Australia and
recommenced shooting for this prestigious event, now
called the “Yorkshire Trophy”.
Initially,
in Australia being shot as a field event, the program
for the trophy is now two fold, one event is still the
field component, but also now the simulation of those
various birds is shot as various disciplines. With bird shooting being very restricted on our shores,
unlike in the UK, the biggest challenge facing shooters
on this day was not the weather, nor pressing world
events as in 1937, but having to shoot 4 different
“rounds”, 25tgts DTL Continental P/S, 25tgts Trench,
25tgts Skeet and 25pair Double Rise Continental, all
with one gun and one set of chokes!
And
so they took to the stations under threatening skies and
a stiff cool breeze with trench being the first event,
some shooters reveling in the event as first choice with
those tight chokes, while others were still looking for
that hard left hander that is somewhere out there in the
paddock.
Next
up was the DTL continental P/S, with most shooters
coming back much happier than their first round. At this
stage, the trophy was anyone’s guess, as the next
round was Skeet. With those who elected to choose tight
chokes, or had no choice, having to be right on the line
to vaporize those close inbound targets.
Again,
after this round, the trophy was still up for grabs, as
the final round of Double Rise Continental, simulating a
pair of driven grouse flushed by the gun dog, being the
decider.
With
the wind strengthening and drizzling rain starting, the
squads gathered to watch the previous shooters chase
those elusive targets around the sky. This event is
certainly advantageous to the taller shooters, as the
“vertically challenged” shooters being literally
“kept on their toes”.
While
Renae was calculating the scores in the office with help
from 5month old son Lachlan, there was much head shaking
around a hot cuppa in the clubhouse after the
challenging days shooting.
Winners
received a share of the cartridge prize pool as well as
the very generous cash sponsorship from Bob Ellison,
with event winner Vito Balliana on 147/175 receiving a
magnificent trophy badge, a case of cartridges and over
$200 in cash, and still wanting to take the beautiful
5lbs of silver perpetual trophy home!! 2nd place was Henry Phillips 142/175,
3rd Dino Santos 138/175, 4th Bob Clifton 135/175 and 5th Paul
Deland 133/175
Congratulations to all winners on some fine
shooting in adverse conditions, and many thanks to Bob
Ellison for his very generous sponsorship of this
prestigious event.

THE YORKSHIRE TROPHY 2009
Dick Chapman, Bob Ellison, Keith Cummings, Henry Phillip
The first Saturday in October 2009
was an eagerly awaited spot on the calendar for the
members and visitors to Newcastle Lake Macquarie ctc.
The Yorkshire Trophy,
generously sponsored by Bob Ellison was shot as a multi
disciplined event encompassing 25tg Skeet, 25tg DTL
Continental P/Score, 25tg ISSF Trap and 25 pair
Continental Double Rise.
What a challenging day this program
proved to be as all competitors completed the event with
one gun and no choke changes.
Mother Nature greeted a
hearty bunch of shooters with great shooting weather,
cold gusty winds and rain. Thank goodness for the ladies
in the kitchen for the hot food and drinks.
John Norris showing his field
shooting skills started well in the skeet section with a
top score of 24/25 to lead the early running just ahead
of Peter Poile on 23/25.
In very tough conditions,
Keith Cummings returning from ‘retirement’ clawed
back some lost ground in the DTL Cont P/Score to take
the lead in the competition.
Most shooters found the going tough
but enjoyable over the rest of the program. As the
weather gave no respite some ‘memorable’ scores were
shot in rough/tough conditions.
At the end of the day when
all scores were tallied Keith Cummings held the
Yorkshire Trophy aloft with a good score of 130/150.
2nd place went to Henry
Phillips on 124/130. Peter Poile took 3rd
place shooting a 118/150 just ahead of equal 4th
place getters Dick Chapman & Bob Ellison on 116/150.
The
committee extends a thankyou to all whom assisted
before, during and after this shoot. With out you, these
events can’t be held.
Thanks again to Bob for his
generous sponsor ship of the event. Thanks to all whom
participated, hope to see next year.
